Located at 33-35 Ioulianou & Cephisou Street in the neighbourhood of Exarcheia, the Hellenic Motor Museum is around 20 minutes walk from the famous Central Athens “Varvakios” Market.
The museum is housed in a modern, multi-level building known as the Athenian Capitol, which also features shops and restaurants, making it the perfect destination for an entire day’s outing.
Upon entering the museum, one of the things that struck me was the sheer variety of vehicles on display. With over 110 unique cars from the early 20th century to the present, the collection is nothing short of awe-inspiring. I found myself transported through time as I wandered through the exhibits, admiring everything from rare classic cars, and vintage cars, to Formula 1 race cars.
What makes the Hellenic Motor Museum truly special, though, is the stories behind the cars. Each vehicle comes with a fascinating history that gives you a glimpse into the lives of the people who owned, designed, and drove them. Some of the most notable cars in the collection include a 1938 Mercedes-Benz 540K Autobahnkurier, a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTE, and even a 1907 Bugatti Type 13.
The Hellenic Motor Museum doesn’t just cater to car enthusiasts, though. As I explored, I discovered it also offers a range of interactive exhibits designed to educate and entertain visitors of all ages. A driving simulator lets you experience the thrill of driving a Formula 1 car, a tire-changing station where you can try your hand at pit crew duties, and even a road safety educational area for the younger visitors.
In addition to the impressive car collection and interactive exhibits, the museum’s architecture is a marvel in itself. The building features a unique spiral ramp that winds its way up through the various levels of the museum, providing visitors with a stunning view of the city skyline as they ascend.
