Things to do in Rhodes

Welcome to my travel guide on the best things to do on the Greek island of Rhodes. For over 20 years, I’ve been exploring Greece, developing a deep love and appreciation for its rich history, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality.

Rhodes, the largest of the Dodecanese islands, is a captivating blend of ancient wonders, medieval charm, and stunning natural beauty. Located in the southeastern Aegean Sea, this sun-drenched island offers a rich tapestry of history, culture, and breathtaking landscapes.

Lindos Village: This picture-perfect village is a postcard come to life. Whitewashed houses with colourful doors and bougainvillaea-draped balconies cling to the hillside, leading up to the majestic Acropolis. Lose yourself in the maze of narrow streets, browse the shops for local crafts, and enjoy delicious Greek cuisine at a traditional taverna.

Lindos Acropolis: This ancient citadel is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece. Climb the steps to the top and be rewarded with panoramic views of the Aegean Sea. Explore the ruins of the Temple of Athena Lindia, the Propylaea, and the Hellenistic Stoa. You can even see evidence of the various civilizations that have occupied this site, from the Greeks to the Romans, Byzantines, and Knights of St. John.

Grand Master Palace Rhodes: Step back in time at this imposing medieval castle. Once the residence of the Grand Masters of the Knights of St. John, the palace now houses a museum with fascinating exhibits on the island’s history. Admire the intricate mosaics, the grand halls, and the impressive fortifications.

Medieval City of Rhodes: A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Old Town is a living museum. Walk along the Street of the Knights, where the different “tongues” (nationalities) of the Knights had their inns. Visit the Hospital of the Knights, now the Archaeological Museum, and marvel at the defensive walls that protected the city.

Ancient Kamiros: Often called the “Pompeii of Greece,” Kamiros is a fascinating ancient city frozen in time. Explore the remains of houses, temples, and public spaces, and get a glimpse into daily life in ancient Greece.

Archaeological Museum of Rhodes: Housed in the former Hospital of the Knights, this museum showcases artefacts from across the island’s history. See beautiful sculptures, pottery, and jewellery, and learn about Rhodes’ rich past.

Bee Museum: Discover the fascinating world of bees at this unique museum. Learn about beekeeping traditions, see how honey is made, and even taste different varieties of local honey.

Butterflies Valley: From June to September, this verdant valley is transformed into a magical realm. Thousands of Jersey Tiger Moths gather here, attracted by the fragrant Oriental Sweetgum trees. Walk along the shaded paths and witness this natural wonder.

Kalithea Springs: These thermal springs were once a popular spa destination. The Art Deco buildings have been restored, and you can relax in the beautiful surroundings, even if the springs are no longer functioning.

Rodini Park: Escape the hustle and bustle and enjoy the tranquillity of this lush park. Stroll along the shaded paths, admire the peacocks, and visit the small zoo.

Seven Springs: This oasis of cool water is a welcome respite on a hot day. Walk through the tunnel to reach the lake, or follow the trails through the forest.

Filerimos Monastery: Perched on a hilltop with panoramic views, this Byzantine monastery is a place of peace and serenity. Visit the church, admire the frescoes, and walk the “Way of the Cross” with its statues depicting the Passion of Christ.

Tsambika Monastery: This clifftop monastery is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and is said to grant miracles to women wishing to conceive. The climb to the top is rewarded with breathtaking views.
